Dear Rainbow Camp Family,

Hello beautiful people! My name is Lisa Bergman (they/them), and I am honored to be stepping into the role of Rainbow Camp Director. As a lifelong camp enthusiast and a proud member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, this camp already holds a special place in my heart. I know firsthand how powerful it can be for youth to have a space where they feel accepted and celebrated for who they are. Such a space allows for beautiful personal growth and self discovery.

Camp feels ingrained into my DNA. I started attending camp when I was eight, and it was a magical place where my social awkwardness was embraced. I could be silly and participate in activities that allowed my quirkiness to shine. Doing crafts gave me a way to express my creativity. Camp games were more about having fun than winning, which suited me well because I was not very athletic nor competitive. Camp had the sole purpose of fun and connection; plus, it allowed us to explore nature more. I have always loved being outdoors with most of my hobbies today being inspired at camp: gardening, camping, hiking, biking, or reading a book in a hammock.

One particular camp in high school had a profound impact on the trajectory of my life. As a teen who had grown up on a farm in rural Ohio, my perspective and worldview were quite limited, and it was my first opportunity to meet other peers from all over the globe. That camp focused on human rights and social justice issues around the world. It inspired me to travel, study abroad, and join the Peace Corps (twice!). I went from barely leaving my hometown to traveling the world. I have now visited over 30 countries and lived in 4, learning bits and pieces of 5 languages (though sadly only fluent in English).

Along my camp journey I have perfected my marshmallow roasting (golden brown!), tent pitching (on the second try), and creating inclusive spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ teens. My mission is to ensure that every camper experiences the magic of camp. I am looking forward to meeting all of you amazing campers, parents, and supporters!

Let’s make this summer ridiculously fun and transformative! Cheers to building amazing memories together!

With love and laughter,

Lisa Bergman (they/them)
