Backgound:
Sault College’s third-year students in the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) Program will be hosting the 14th annual “We All Love Kids” W.A.L.K. this Saturday, April 12th 2014. Proceeds for this year’s W.A.L.K. will support Rainbow Camp, a camp designated for youth that are connected with the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and questioning) community. Children and their families are invited to participate in this event with registration beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the main entrance of Sault College’s Health and Wellness Centre. This year’s W.A.L.K. will be a bright, camp-themed event with many family-friendly activities including a bean bag toss, face painting, a fish pond and much more.

“The CYW third-year class is excited and eager to host the day filled with fun events, activities and free food,” says Laurel Cathcart, third-year CYW student and publicity committee Chair. “We want to have the community come together and raise funds and awareness of an important cause. We are hoping for a great turn out, lots of donations and a memorable day for children and their families throughout Sault Ste. Marie.”

As part of the goals of the CYW program, students specialize in helping children, youth and families improve their lives. Students receive extensive training in counseling skills, group dynamics, recreation leadership, psychology and social issues.

“This student-run fundraising event is an end of the year class project that has the graduating class involved in every aspect of the event, including where proceeds are donated,” states Professor Donna Mansfield of the Sault College CYW program. “As CYW’s, we are committed to supporting our community through projects that require a meaningful event for our
community. The students learn the importance of advocating and bringing awareness to issues while building important community partnerships.”

The efforts of the CYW W.A.L.K. throughout the years have raised over $57,000 for children, youth and families in Sault Ste. Marie. Free parking for the event is available anywhere on campus including the J-lot (south) located in front of the Student Health and Wellness Centre, where activities will be held.
